Emergency Preparedness

Jordan Public Schools has implemented the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation in collaboration with local law enforcement. The SRP is based not on individual scenarios, but on the response to any given situation. Because the safety of everyone in our schools is our first priority, the district is committed to learning from past crises, research and best practice recommendations while partnering with the Jordan Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff's Department.

As a District, we have worked with the Minnesota Department of Homeland Security - School Safety Division and the Jordan Police Department to completely review and revise the District’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP). This plan is a private document that provides District employees and students with a guide on how to react and respond to a crisis situation. Our plan incorporates the I Love U Guys Foundation SRP.

We have provided age appropriate discussion guides for parents to continue the conversation about safety and lockdown drills with their child at home.

We'd like to thank neighboring districts, Minnesota Department of Homeland Security - School Safety Division, and the Jordan Police Department for sharing information regarding their procedures as we look to continually improve on the best safety protocols for our students and staff.

Standard Response Protocol

Hold

A hold is initiated when the hallways need to be kept clear due to an emergency scenario. Students and staff are instructed to clear the halls and remain securely in a classroom or area until the scenario is resolved.

Example:
A student or staff medical emergency has occurred and the hallways need to be cleared for emergency medical personnel to access and support the scenario.

Parents/Guardians:
When a hold is in place at one of our buildings, it will be business as usual for parents/guardians.

Secure

A secure is initiated when the building is locked, and students and activities are brought inside as a precaution due to activity in the area, but not within the school or on school grounds. In this scenario, learning will continue within the building with minimal interruptions or distractions.

Example:
The school or district was informed of a law enforcement scenario happening nearby. The secure is put into place as a precaution.

Parents/Guardians:
When a secure is in place at one of our buildings, no persons will be able to enter or exit the building until the secure has been lifted. Depending on the scenario, it may not be safe to release students. As the scenario evolves the secure might change to a Monitored Entry and/or Controlled Release.

Lockdown

A lockdown is initiated when there is perceived danger inside or very near a school building. All students and staff are trained to get behind a locked door - Locks, Lights, Out of Sight.

Example:
There is a threat inside the school or a dangerous scenario very near the building.

Parents/Guardians:
When a lockdown is in place at one of our buildings, the natural inclination for parents/guardians is to go to the building. It is unlikely that parents/guardians will be able to access the building or campus as law enforcement will likely be responding. If parents/guardians are already in the building, they will be instructed to lockdown, as well.

We recognize the importance of communication between parents/guardians and students during a lockdown event. Parents/guardians should be aware that during the initial period of lockdown that it may not be safe for students to text their parents/guardians. At Jordan Public Schools, our cell phone policy is that student devices are put away during school hours, so students may not have access to their phones during an event.

Evacuate

A evacuate is initiated when students and staff are moved to a new or safe location due to a situation in or near one of our school buildings.

Example:
A gas leak in a school building has initiated a evacuate.

Parents/Guardians:
When an evacuate is initiated at one of our buildings, parents/guardians will be notified of next steps, including possible reunification sites and procedures.

Shelter

See Something, Say Something

We encourage all students to say something when they hear or notice anything that may seem suspicious or troubling regarding school safety. If there are any concerns about reporting and would like to remain anonymous, the Jordan Police Department has an anonymous JORDAN TIP APP that we encourage students and community to use.
