Jordan Middle School Students Experience Hometown Pride through Service Learning

At Jordan Middle School, we believe that education doesn’t just happen behind a desk. It happens through real-world experiences and giving back to our local community. This school year students in grades 5 through 8 proved that you are never too young to lead, and no act of kindness is too small to make an impact. 

Through service learning initiatives, our JMS students transitioned from being learners to being community architects. Here is a look at just a few of the many service learning projects our students participated in during the 2025-2026 school year. 

Feeding Local and Global Communities
Students and staff kicked off October with the Feed My Starving Children service event held at the CERC. Students worked in high-energy teams to pack life-saving meals for global communities. They, along with students from Jordan Elementary School and Jordan High School, and community volunteers, packed 516,024 meals which will feed 1,413 kids for a year. 

For our local community, JMS students continued in the spirit of giving with the Giving Games Food Drive for the Jordan Food Shelf in December. During this giving event, students and staff were able to collect and donate more than 1,200 food items! Students and staff continued this spirit of giving with a March Madness Food Drive in March, donating more than 850 items to the Jordan Food Shelf! These weren’t just collections, they were lessons in logistics, teamwork, and empathy, helping to ensure that our local food shelf remained stocked throughout the winter months. 

Stewards of the Earth
In April, our students traded their pens for gardening gloves as JMS celebrated Earth Day. Students participated in spreading new mulch in the beds around the Jordan Public Schools campus and partnering with the City of Jordan to plant seeds at Veteran’s Park as part of their work to restore pollinator habitats. This commitment to the local landscape was also visible this fall and spring as students participated in Highway Cleanups along County Road 66! 

Connecting the Generations
One of the most heartwarming highlights of the year occurred this May when our WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) Leaders from grades 8 and 5 teamed up to create and deliver May Day baskets to the residents of the Schule Haus and Oak Terrace Senior Living communities. This annual event serves as a reminder that service is the bridge between generations! 

Displaying Safety and Leadership Every Day
While many projects were special events, one service project happens every morning and afternoon when our JMS Safety Patrol team helps students and staff safely cross Sunset Drive in front of our schools. Their consistency and reliability, even while braving the elements to ensure students and staff arrive and depart safely, are truly the gold standard of learning through service!

Service learning allows our JMS students to see the tangible results of their hard work and how it shapes our community. “Connecting students with the broader community helps them see their worth and how giving back goes a long way, just by using our time, talents, and treasures,” shared JMS Substitute Principal Rose Gulbranson. 

The staff at Jordan Middle School is appreciative of the community partnerships that make these service learning opportunities available to JMS students in grades 5 through 8, and look forward to continuing to make an impact on our community for years to come!
