What’s Cool in Our School: First Graders Explore Leaves with Microscopes

Jordan Elementary School first graders became scientists right in our school’s backyard! As part of their autumn learning unit, students headed out to the woods to take a closer look at the changing leaves.

With handheld microscopes, donated through grant funding from the Jordan Education Foundation, students discovered the hidden details of leaves and learned more about chlorophyll. They compared different leaf colors, noticed unique patterns, and were amazed by the tiny structures they could see up close!

The activity, led by JES first grade teachers, combined hands-on STEM learning with the beauty of nature. It gave students the chance to explore science in a fun, memorable way while fostering curiosity about the world around them.

First grade teacher Amanda McMahon shared, “The first graders have had so much fun using the Little Marvin Microscopes that we were able to purchase as part of the Jordan Education Foundation grant. Typically microscopes are used in older grades and indoors, but we have been able to give the first graders a hands-on experience using this tool in the woods looking at bark, leaves, dirt, and so much more. We have been able to take the learning experience to a deeper level and increased the level of engagement.”

The excitement was easy to see — students couldn’t stop sharing what they observed through their microscopes. Activities like this bring science to life and highlight how learning extends far beyond our classroom walls!
